Father stabbed three sons to death in car

A father stabbed his three young sons to death in the back of their car outside a Los Angeles elementary school before seriously injuring himself, police have said.

The man, said to be in his 30s, was found in the car bleeding from stab wounds to the chest.

The three boys, aged between eight and 12, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Los Angeles Police Officer Matthew Ludwig said the father is the only suspect in the killings. He is in a critical condition in hospital and will be arrested if he survives his wounds.

The man had no history of domestic violence charges or arrests, police said.

Police Chief Charlie Beck said: "There are horrific incidents. These are incidents that have scarred not only a community but the first responders that have to handle them.

"It is a sad day in LA."

Chief Beck said the three boys did not attend the elementary school. He said the boys' mother was deceased and their stepmother was being interviewed by detectives.

It was unclear whether the boys lived with their father.
