UN begins process for electing next Secretary General

The UN General Assembly passed a resolution Friday outlining a new process for selecting the next UN Secretary General in a push for increased transparency and inclusiveness.

The resolution comes as UN member states call for clearer guidelines and more say in the candidate selection process that currently takes place behind closed doors among five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

The council traditionally presents the name of one candidate to the General Assembly for approval after a secretive selection process.

Critics say the decision comes down to an agreement among the five world powers which include: Britain, China, France, Russia and the U.S.

The resolution requested that the Security Council and the President of the General Assembly solicited nominations from member states through a letter.

It also requested that the letter should contain a description of the entire process and inviting candidates to be presented in a timely manner.

The aim was to ensure that the most qualified leader is elected, the text calls on the council to update member states about the names of candidates including their resumes.

The push to overturn the current process has also included a strong call for a woman to lead the UN as only men have lead the UN during the 70 years of its existence.

The resolution stressed the importance of gender balance while also calling for the appointment of the best possible candidate for the position.
