NASA to deliver big news about Mars today

NASA is about to reveal some big news about the red planet.

In an announcement it said it would "provide details of key science findings from the agency's ongoing exploration of Mars".

It said the revelations will revolve around the "fate of Mars' atmosphere" but gave no more details.

However, some believe that a list of the speakers released by NASA gives some clues: four of the speakers participating in the conference are listed as authors in a paper addressing NASA's MAVEN spacecraft's findings on Mars' atmosphere.

The paper explains how the loss of atmospheric particles into space could have contributed to the evolution of the Red Planet's climate over the last 4 billion years.

This suggests the event could relate to how the planet turned from a wet and warm place to the dry and cold place it is today.

MAVEN stands for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, and the craft has been studying the planet's upper atmosphere since its arrival in Mars' orbit in September 2014.

It is looking into whether gas loss through Mars' atmosphere may have been a factor in the planet's climate change.
