Rerun: Wike sets up panel to probe killings

The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the violence and killings that occurred during  the March 19 state and National Assembly rerun elections.

Also,  the Peoples Democratic Party caucus in the Senate and the party’s National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff,  on Thursday asked Independent National Electoral Commission to release  outstanding results of the re-run National and State House of Assembly elections held in the state last Saturday.

The governor, who spoke in a state broadcast on Thursday, said the establishment of the commission was to forestall a recurrence of the violence and killings recorded during the exercise in parts of the state.

He explained that part of the expectations from the commission was to make recommendations that would be implemented by the state government.

Wike said, “In order to forestall a repeat of the needless violence and fatalities in future elections, I hereby establish a Judicial Commission of Enquiry to investigate the violence, killings and other related acts that occurred in parts of the state during the March 19, 2016 rerun elections and make appropriate recommendations to the government for implementation.”

He named members of the panel as Hon. Justice Monima Wenike Danagogo, chairman; Venerable John Adubasim, member; Mrs. Douye Green, member; Mr. Joseph Zabbey; member, Mr. Luke Nwanodi; member; and Mrs. Uche Uriri; secretary.

A statement issued in Port Harcourt by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Electronic Media, Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu indicated that members of the commission would be sworn in by the governor on Friday (today).
