Germany is definitely stepping up its game when it comes to ensuring the safety of its pedestrians. When the officials in the city of Augsburg noticed how people never looked up from their smartphones and ignored traffic signals, they decided to do something about it.
Hence came the invention of installing traffic lights right into the sidewalk. The genius idea was based on the premise that pedestrians wouldn't have to tear their eyes away from their phones while crossing a road. They can continue using their phones and won't miss the lights in the sidewalk.
A survey conducted in Berlin and several other European countries revealed that nearly 20% of pedestrians missed the signal change because they were distracted by their phones. It was also found that younger folks are more likely to risk their safety for a quick look at their WhatsApp and Facebook.
However, not everyone agrees. Many pedestrians see the new move as a waste of taxpayers' money.
The idea came after a 15-year-old girl was killed by a tram as she was distracted by her smartphone. Sure seems like a good move since everyone walks with technology in their hands.
