The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, on Thursday issued a new draft regulatory framework for value added services in the country’s telecommunications sector.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Umar Danbatta, announced this in Lagos at the consultative forum on the new draft regulation.
Mr. Danbatta assured that the NCC would do everything to protect and empower consumers of telecommunications services by ensuring that they derived the highest value from services they get from providers in the sector.
Mr. Danbatta said the forum, attended by representatives of consumer communities, operators and services providers, National Assembly members, was another landmark exercise toward the implementation of a key component of the Commission’s eight-points agenda.
Mr. Danbatta described the framework as a decision that would not only make consumers happy, but the operators and the regulators would be its biggest beneficiaries.
“This is a deliberate response to legislative directives as well as to the yearnings of the operators for the rules of engagement to be made very clear for them as well as to protect and empower consumers of telecommunications services in Nigeria.
We are going to do more in setting the pace in regulatory excellence,” he said
He said that consistent with the Commission’s eight-points agenda, consumers would be put at the front burner of regulatory excellence.
On complaints by operators about lack of rules of engagement on Value Added Services (VAS) provision, the EVC said concerns across the broad spectrum of telecommunications sector and progress of the industry would be addressed by clarifying the rules of engagement between operators, consumers and the regulator.
Representative of the House of Representatives Committee on Communications, Douye Diri, the NCC management must inject new vigor in consumer protection policy to gradually restore consumer confidence in the system.
