Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has asked the All Progressives Congress to stop crying foul over the June 21, 2014 governorship election in the state.
Fayose was reacting to the 102 petitions sent to the office of the acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, by the All Progressives Congress in the state.
The governor said the Ekiti election was adjudged as free, fair and credible by the international community, including the United States.
This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the governor, Lere Olayinka.
The Ekiti State chapter of the APC had petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, James Etop, over alleged threats to the lives of its members by Governor Ayodele Fayose’s aides.
A statement by the Ekiti State Secretary of the APC, Omotoso Ayodele, called the attention of the CP to a petition the party filed on June 26, 2016, alleging planned attacks against the party’s members.
In the petition, which was sent to the State Director, Department of State Services, Andrew Iorkay, Omotoso stated that on Monday June 27, 2016, while staging a rally against President Muhammadu Buhari, some hoodlums suspected to be PDP members stormed a restaurant and bar operated by an APC member, Mrs. Ayoola Adetola, at the Okeyinmi area of Ado Ekiti.
Omotoso claimed the hoodlums smashed many cartons of beer worth about N40, 000 for no reason other than for Adetola being a member of the APC.
He added that in the latest plot, some top APC members, including the party’s spokesman, Taiwo Olatunbosun, and the members of the APC’s media team, were being marked for attacks to keep them out of circulation.
He said, “Similarly, as we mentioned in our earlier letter about the threats of attacks, another member of our party, Mrs. Omotunde Fajuyi, whose organisation, Be The Change Organisation, led the anti-corruption rally in support of President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, June 24, 2016, has come under both verbal attacks and threats of assassination from persons suspected to be working for Governor Ayodele Fayose.”
Fayose, however, urged the new IGP to uphold police ethics and maintain the rule of law as done by his immediate predecessor, Mr. Solomon Arase.
He added, “He should be mindful of being drawn into needless political fights orchestrated by some APC governorship aspirants in Ekiti State just because of the fear of 2018. It should also be pointed out that it is the duty of the Attorney General of Ekiti State to prosecute anyone that committed any offence in Ekiti State and not that of the Attorney General of the Federation.
“Most importantly, the IGP should be mindful of the reality that writing over 100 petitions to the police, two years after an election was won and lost and expecting the police to embark on wanton arrest of innocent Ekiti people is a clear invitation to anarchy.”
