"Both my legs have been cut off" Student calls for help after being run over by TRAIN

A hospital spokesman said: "He had lost a huge amount of blood and we had to ask staff to donate some as we didn’t have enough"

Lucky escape: Student Chandan Jha, 26, is recovering in hospital after his legs were severed as he tried to jump off a moving train
A man miraculously escaped death after both his legs were severed when he tried jumping off a moving train.

Pharmacy student Chandan Jha, who decided to take a short cut home, fell under the wheels after he opened the carriage door and lost his balance.

The 26-year-old, whose legs were mangled in the accident, removed his shirt and tied it around the stumps of his legs as he lay bleeding to death on the tracks.

Chandan, who had been returning home from an exam in the Indian capital New Delhi, said: "I nearly had a heart attack when I went to touch my legs and felt just a gooey mess.

"But I realised that unless I did something fast I could easily die, if not from loss of blood then from a wild animal."

Recovering: Chandan Jha had to have both legs amputated after suffering horrific injuries

The student had tried to jump off the train as it slowed down near his house - before it reached the station in Habibganj in central India where it was heading.

Despite his horrific injuries, Chandan was able to call police from his mobile phone saying: "Hello, I had an accident while getting off the train.

"Both my legs have been cut off and there is no one to help me. Please help me."

After giving his exact location, he was rescued 20 minutes later and taken to a nearby hospital.

A hospital spokesman said: "He had lost a huge amount of blood and we had to ask staff to donate some as we didn’t have enough.

"We then operated which took about three hours.

"We had to amputate both legs just below the knees."

Chandan is now said to be recovering before having consultations with medics about artificial limbs and rehabilitation to adjust to his disabled status.
