Suicide bomber strikes near Kano mosque, casualties unknown

An explosion has gone off near a Mosque in Kano, with the suicide bomber ferrying the explosive feared dead, witnesses and a police official said.

Witnesses say the casualty figure in the incident is unclear at this time, although a police spokesperson said the teenage female suicide bomber has been confirmed dead.

The spokesperson for the Kano Police Command, Magaji Majiya, said the teenage bomber detonated the explosive at 9:30 p.m Monday after she was prevented from accessing the Umar Bin Khatab mosque along Zaria Road.

The incident happened just as faithful were dispersing after observing the late night (Tarawih) prayer, witnesses said.

“She was trying to cross over to the mosque, but she was stopped,” Mr. Majiya said. “She immediately detonated the bomb and died immediately.”

Monday night’s bombing in Kano came 24 hours after a similar attack on a restaurant and a mosque in Jos, the Plateau State capital, left no fewer than 44 persons dead and 48 others injured.

Another attack on a church in Potiskum, Yobe state, also on Sunday, killed six people.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but security agencies believe the bombings have the imprimatur of the extremist Boko Haram sect that has been killing and maiming innocent Nigerians in the past six years.
