Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, yesterday restated its determination to reduce carnage on the nation’s highways. Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi, stated this in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during a programme tagged ‘Operation Scorpion’ targeted mainly at truck drivers.
Represented by FRSC’s Deputy Corps Marshal in Charge of Training, Standard and Certification, Mr. Ademola Lawal, Oyeyemi said it was the corps duty to ensure that this category of transporters adheres to safety procedures.
He said the training was aimed at making sure the roads are safe and the rate of road crashes involving tanker drivers and others are reduced to the barest minimum, adding that FRSC will continue to have annual certification of drivers.
The corps marshal said drivers would be trained in all areas, adding that medical examination would be conducted to determine their state of mind before handling their tankers.
“Some of them may have eye problems, high blood pressure and other ailments unknown to them, which explains why we are starting with enlightenment to educate them on some of these things,” he said.
He regretted that a lot of accidents have been recorded involving tanker drivers on the highways, saying FRSC cannot fold its arms and watch the situation continue. “Our training is going to be all encompassing.
We are going to work on their temperament and psyche. We are going to let them know their actions on the highways,” he said.
He noted that the roads belong to all and called on tanker drivers to have respect for other road users and to shun over-speeding, overloading, as well as to ensure that trucks were road worthy.
