Manchester United are in contract talks with goalkeeper David de Gea following the collapse of his transfer to Real Madrid, according to Sky sources.
The Spain international saw his hopes of a move to the Bernabeu dashed when the two clubs were unable to file the paperwork prior to the Spanish transfer window deadline, after a £29m deal had been agreed with Keylor Navas set to move in the opposite direction.
United have consistently stated their reluctance to lose their player of the year for the past two seasons and would like to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the current campaign.
De Gea is represented by super agent Jorge Mendes, with whom United have a long-standing relationship, and Mendes was spotted at the club's Carrington training ground on Thursday along with members of De Gea's family for talks.
Sky Sports News HQ reporter James Cooper has followed the situation closely all summer, and while he views Mendes' presence as a positive development, he warned United fans to temper their expectations.
"I think it is important at this stage to look at the facts - and the facts are that Mendes was there and so were members of De Gea's family," Cooper told Sky Sports News.
"From Manchester United's perspective, they want to safeguard the future of David de Gea and get assurances about his season with the club.
"They will have pointed out that there was a deal on the table for him that was rejected earlier this year and is still on the table. I don't think it is a new deal. They have not offered him a new deal. They have merely reminded there is a deal on the table to be signed.
"It would see his wages escalate, it would last for five years and I think it would give Manchester United the comfort of knowing they would have a fee, bearing in mind many thought De Gea would be a Real Madrid player at this stage.
"No one at Manchester United thought he would remain at the club throughout that transfer window. Clearly there were problems at the end of transfer deadline day.
"It is important to say these are tentative discussions. I think Mendes and his family were there really just to see that everything will be OK for the season ahead, bearing in mind De Gea has not kicked a ball for Manchester United so far this season."
