The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has expressed its support for President Muhammadu Buhari in his drive to end terrorism and stamp out corruption in the country.
The group said the step, so far taken by Buhari was a pointer to the fact that the country would soon return to sanity again.
These were part of the communique issued by the group after its 11th Annual All Nigerian Editors Conference (ANEC), held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
They, however, advised that the fight against corruption should be total and not selective.
The communique read in part: “The media will remain steadfast in objective reportage of events in the country, as well as be facilitators and agents of the positive change that Nigerians desire. That Nigerians must unite to build a nation that is prosperous and secure, irrespective of political, ethnic and religious differences.
“That government, at all levels, must carry the mass media along in planning and execution of critical developmental policies and programmes. That the steps taken, so far, by the President Buhari-led government to tackle terrorism are commendable and urges Nigerians not to politicise or ethnicise the war against the scourge, stressing that much more must be done by all stakeholders to ensure that every part of country is secure.
“That the present administration’s war against corruption is commendable but that every effort must be made to ensure that it is not selective. Every Nigerian must support the battle to eradicate the monster, which has adversely affected the country.”
The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who was Special Guest of Honour and represented at the three day meeting, by Dr. (Mrs) Folashade Yemi-Esan, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information, called on the Nigerian media to support the change agenda of the Buhari administration. The group also commended Buhari for appointing two past presidents of the Guild, Mr. Femi Adesina and Mallam Garba Shehu, as Special Adviser and Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity, respectively.
The Guild also convened a Special Convention at which the recommendations of the Standing Committee that the vacancy created by the appointment of Mr. Adesina be filled. Accordingly, the erstwhile Deputy President of the Guild, Mallam Garba Deen Mohammad was elected substantive National President of the Guild. Subsequently, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, formerly Vice President (West), was elected Deputy President while Mrs. Funke Egbemode was elected Vice-President (West).
