Sir Bobby Charlton paid fulsome tribute to Wayne Rooney after the Manchester United striker overhauled his international goals tally to become England's top goalscorer.
Rooney's penalty in the 2-0 European Championships qualifying victory over Switzerland at Wembley meant he overtook Charlton's record of 49 which had stood for 45 years.
Rooney has also scored in seven consecutive games for England - which is a post-war record - and the landmark goal against the Swiss was his 300th professional career goal; he has 233 for Manchester United, 50 for England and 17 for Everton.
While admitting he was disappointed to lose the record, Charlton said he was happy it has remained at Old Trafford following Rooney's 84th-minute strike.
Sir Bobby said: "I would like to congratulate Wayne on becoming England's leading goalscorer. I have always been very proud to hold this record. Playing for my country was always an honour and a privilege and something I did with great pride.
"I obviously cannot deny that I am disappointed that I now don't hold this record, however, I am absolutely delighted that it is Wayne, as captain of my beloved club and country, who now holds this record.
"On behalf of myself and everyone at Manchester United I would like to say congratulations Wayne, this is a very proud moment for you and your family.
"It is a record that I am sure you will hold for a long time, and it is clear to see that you will go on scoring for your club and country for a long time to come."
Rooney is also edging closer to the all-time appearance record - he is now joint fifth with Ashley Cole on 107 caps - Peter Shilton still leads the way with 125.
