Stock car racer dies during victory lap

A stock car racer has died after apparently suffering a medical problem while carrying out a victory lap following a race in Vermont.

Leon Gonyo, of Chazy, New York, had just won the NASCAR All-American Series Modified race at Devil's Bowl Speedway when he suffered the problem.

Authorities said he accelerated into a wall while driving around the track in Fair Haven, injuring a speedway official.

The 63-year-old had raced stock cars for more than 40 years in northeast America and Canada and the race on Saturday was his fifth victory of the season at the track.

A statement from the race track described Mr Gonyo as a "true gentleman of the sport".

It said: "Much more than just a winner, Leon Gonyo was a very well-respected and highly-regarded member of the local stock car racing community.

"Our thoughts and very best wishes are with Leon Gonyo's family and race team, his wide-reaching fan base, and the community of Chazy, New York.

"Rest easy, Leon Gonyo. Thank you for sharing your passion and your class with us all."

Mr Gonyo was treated at the scene by medical staff but was declared dead at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Race officials said he was wearing a helmet and seatbelt at the time of the accident.

An autopsy has been scheduled for later this week.
