Nurse finds hit and run victim was her brother

An emergency room nurse discovered her brother had been fatally injured in a hit and run crash after opening his wallet to find out his identity.

Jennifer Medina was working at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, California, when a man was brought in unresponsive and not breathing.

As medics worked to save him, she recognised her brother Cesar's wallet and opened it up to find his photograph inside.

Ms Medina told NBC4 News: "I recognised the wallet. And she (colleague) opened it up and it was my brother's face right there.

"And everything just, everything just collapsed and I just couldn't hold it together.

"I just knew I wanted to say my last goodbyes to Andy. And they cleaned him up and I got to go in there and kiss him and tell him how much I love him."

Witnesses said Mr Medina, 23, was hit as he skateboarded on a crosswalk in Del Obispo, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Accounts said he was crossing the street on a green light when he was struck.

The vehicle involved in the collision failed to stop at the scene.

On Saturday, Andrew Christopher Michaels, 19, of Laguna Niguel, was arrested on charges of felony hit and run and was due to be booked into Orange County Jail.

A Dodge Ram truck was also towed from a house as part of the investigation.

Family members have set up a GoFundMe page in Cesar Medina's memory.
