Several people feared dead in fire at a traveller site south of Dublin

Several people are feared to have been killed in a fire at a traveller site south of Dublin.

Six fire crews and three ambulances were sent to the scene at Carrickmines in the early hours of the morning, according to Dublin's Fire Brigade.

Irish media reported "at least eight people" had been killed in the fire, although emergency services have not yet confirmed the exact number.

A Garda spokesman said: "The emergency services have been at scene since approximately 4am this morning. There are believed to be a number of fatalities and two adults have also been taken to St Vincents and Tallaght Hospitals suffering from smoke inhalation."

Dublin Fire Brigade tweeted that there were "a number of fatalities on scene" and that two adults and two children had been taken to hospital.

Sinn Féin councillor Chris Curran told Independent.ie the family were "well-known and well-liked".

"I've heard information locally that as many as eight people have passed away and a young child remains in hospital.

"It certainly seems that the poor family in this case that has been affected have been living in this area for a very long time, certainly in my knowledge.

"An awful lot of people would have known them.

"They would have been well-liked and well-known."

Distressed neighbours and friends have laid bunches of flowers at the site of the fire on Glenamuck Road.

A local resident told The Herald that the victims were from three generations of the same family living on the site, including grandchildren understood to be under the age of seven.
