A mum has been arrested after claims that her three daughters were locked in an apartment for up to 10 YEARS.

The woman, 59, was held by police in the small Swedish town of Bromolla after reports that one of her children briefly escaped and told a neighbour to call the police.

It is believed the now adult child said they had been locked up for over a decade.

Witnesses say one of the women led out of the apartment "could barely walk by herself.”

The women are now believed to be aged 32, 24 and 23.

Police spokesman Ewa-Gun Westford told The Local: "We got a report at half past five on Wednesday evening. A worried citizen called the police and claimed that someone had kept three children locked up for many years," she said.

"The woman was arrested on Thursday morning," she added.

News of the woman's arrest has shocked residents in the small town, which has a population of fewer than 8,000.

Speaking to newspaper Expressen, a neighbour said: "The blinds were always pulled down there and we haven’t heard any noise from the apartment."

A man who claims he is the father of the three women has told a Swedish newspaper that he has been searching for the children for 17 years.

Expressen reports that the woman moved the children around to different locations in an effort to keep them away from their father.

Police spokeswoman Ewa-Gun Westford said the mother had “restricted her children’s freedom... for quite a few years.”

Investigators are now questioning the woman and the children; all aged over 18, at a police station in the nearby town of Kristianstad.
