AIT, others free to cover Buhari’s activities –APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that all accredited media are free to cover the activities of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.

Reacting to the purported ban of African Independent Television (AIT) from covering Buhari’s activities, the party said that all media that have accreditation, including the AIT, can cover Buhari’s activities.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said the incoming Buhari Administration will not discriminate against any media organisation, irrespective of its role during the electioneering campaign leading up to the recent polls. ”
Recall that security officials attached to Buhari reportedly barred AIT crew from covering the functions of the president-elect till further notice.

The security team were said to have cited security reports and ethical issues as reasons for their action.
The directive, which took effect on Monday, April 27, was reportedly enforced when members of AIT crew, who were at the Defence House to cover of a meeting between Buhari and a visiting Cuban delegation, were allegedly asked to leave.
Confirming the action, the crew said: “Yes, we were told to leave, but, we cannot just leave. We have a job to do. In any case, we have not been officially informed about what we have done wrong.”

On why AIT was restricted from covering functions of the president-elect, the Director of Press of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Garba Sheh, had said that security concerns informed the decision.
