Football paper headlines

A round-up of the stories making the back pages of this morning's national newspapers.

THE TIMES

Patrick Vieira will be among the frontrunners to replace Manuel Pellegrini as Manchester City boss should the Chilean leave the Etihad this summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he will leave Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund after this campaign has seen him installed as the bookmakers’ favourite to take up the City hotseat in the summer.

However, 38-year-old Vieira, who is the City U21 manager, is expected to feature in a list of candidates should Pellegrini be dismissed.

DAILY MIRROR

Jose Mourinho is finally set to axe Oscar this summer - and reignite Chelsea's interest in West Ham forward Enner Valencia.

Manchester City face competition from Italian side Napoli if they are to make Borussia Dortmund's outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp their new boss.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is keeping checks on QPR assist king Matt Phillips.

Louis van Gaal has revealed he has been working on new summer signings for Manchester United since the turn of the year.

Chelsea look to be on the verge of completing a move for Brazilian wonderkid Nathan.

Cash-rich Newcastle must spend, spend, spend this summer if they want to restore any Premier League pride, according to John Carver.

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure from Borussia Dortmund has put a host of European clubs on alert.

The 47-year-old, who won two Bundesliga titles and led his team to the Champions League Final, announced he will leave the club at the end of the season but said he won’t take a sabbatical from football.

Klopp has been linked to a number of English clubs in the past, with Manchester City and Arsenal both moving to distance themselves from the German. His announcement will also alert Real Madrid who are said to be considering a change despite Carlo Ancelotti leading Los Blancos to the Champions League crown last year.

THE GUARDIAN

Former England boss Fabio Capello has reopened old wounds with the FA by claiming that John Terry should still be playing for the national side.

Capello resigned as England manager in 2012 when the FA stripped Terry of the captaincy amid allegations he had racially abused Anton Ferdinand in a match between Chelsea and QPR in October 2011.

The Italian said Terry is “one of the best”.

THE INDEPENDENT

Manchester City are facing a dilemma after Jurgen Klopp announced he would be leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.

Indications were that City will stick with manager Manuel Pellegrini for another season, all the while hoping that Pep Guardiola could be persuaded to join from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2016.

However, Klopp’s announcement has given City’s hierarchy a decision to make.

DAILY MAIL

Charlie Austin could be in line for a surprise England call-up for the side’s summer fixtures.

The QPR striker has scored 17 goals for his relegation-threatened team this season and is in contention as Harry Kane will be with Gareth Southgate’s U21 side at the European Championships in the Czech Republic.

THE SUN

Steve Clarke is worried that fixture chaos is in danger of harming the FA Cup.

His Reading side could have to wait a month to play in the Wembley final after their season finishes if they pull off a shock against Arsenal in the semi-final on Saturday and Clarke said things must be done to protect a “great competition”.

DAILY RECORD

Scottish football’s top flight playoff final leg could be rescheduled if Hibernian secure a place in the Scottish Cup final on May 30 by beating Falkirk on Saturday.

SPFL bosses could shift the date of the showpiece final from May 31 to the first week of June but that would create a logistical nightmare for clubs likely to be involved as many players will either be out of contract or out of the country on holiday.
