House explodes: Lucky escape for family who took Easter Sunday walk just before blast rips through home

The decision to go for a Sunday Easter walk saved the lives of a Lincolnshire family - because moments later their house was levelled by a fiery explosion.

The residents had a lucky escape, judging by these pictures of the destruction.

Fire crews were called to the detached property following reports of a loud explosion at around 4.40pm on Sunday.

Windows at the back of the house were blown out of their frames and there was substantial damage to the roof and brickwork.

Thankfully, people living in the house weren't injured in the blast and emergency services said they were all safe and well.

Fiery: The explosion is thought to have been caused by a gas leak
Police and fire crews have launched an investigation into the explosion that happened in Theddlethorpe, near Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, but aren't treating it as suspicious.

The owners cheated death, said fire service group manager Sean King.

He added: "It was a significant explosion caused, we think, by some kind of gas leak, but we haven't been able to determine the exact cause yet due to the extensive damage.

"Luckily they'd [the owners] gone for a walk and if they'd been in the house at the time it could have been a very different story."

Insp Simon Elmes of Lincolnshire Police said: "The fire is out and now an investigation is being carried out to find out what happened to cause the explosion."
