For months, British TV personality Katie Hopkins publicly shamed Clarkson for not being thinner. Though the American Idol winner shrugged off her cruel comments in a magazine interview, Hopkins continued to spread negativity, going so far as to criticize Clarkson's 9-month-old daughter, River Rose Blackstock.
Clarkson
received widespread support from celebrities and fans alike, and while
she appreciated their sentiments, she a bit was surprised that Hopkins'
comments had such resonance. "I love how people think that's new," she
said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Friday. "Like, welcome to the past 13 years!"
The "Heartbeat Song" singer said she was considered "the biggest girl" when she competed on Fox's American Idol
in 2002. "I wasn't big, but people would call me big," she recalled.
Recently, she said, "People are like, 'I'm so sorry that lady in London
was so mean to you.' And I'm like, 'Are you serious?' Like, get in
line!"
How did the pop star develop such a thick skin?
"I think what
hurts my feelings for people is when I'll have a meet and greet after
the show and a girl whose, like, bigger than me will be in the meet and
greet and be like, 'Oh, God!' And they'll say, 'If they think you're big
I must be so fat to them.' It's like, you just are who you are. We are
who we are—whatever size. It doesn't mean that we're gonna be that
forever. That's the thing! Sometimes we're more fit. Like, especially
me. I'm such a creative person that I yo-yo. Sometimes I'm more fit and I
get into kickboxing hardcore. And then sometimes I don't and I'm like,
'I'd rather have wine,'" she laughed.
Ellen DeGeneres agreed
with Clarkson, saying, "I think that's totally fine. As long as you're
happy and as long as you feel like you're taking care of yourself and
healthy. I want you to be able to have your wine!"
"I do too!" Clarkson said.
