The young female, who was enjoying a spring holiday in Florida, was cooling off in the clear blue water when she noticed she was joined by an enormous marine mammal.
Screaming in terror, the woman immediately panicked, trying desperately to swim away - but luckily for her it turned out to be a plant-eating manatee.
But her frantic doggy paddling was to no avail, as it calmly followed her around in the water, clearly not worried by her very loud yelling.
In the clip, the girl screams: "Oh my God, get me out of here," while a friend on a nearby boat helpfully points out: "It's behind you."
The hilarious footage was filmed on the girl's selfie stick, which she was attempting to hold aloft as she swam through the water.
Since the clip was uploaded to YouTube on April 6, it has clocked up more than 7.6 million views.
It was originally published online by the girl's friend Katie Gringrich who admitted the whole scene was "hilarious".
According to National Geographic, manatees are large, slow-moving animals that are often found in coastal waters and rivers. They are harmless to humans and prefer to snack on water grasses, weeds and algae.
