Revealed: Despite the wave of online criticism, the new bride was apparently more than happy for the engagement to take place |
But now the woman whose partner was subjected to heated internet criticism for proposing on someone else's special day has revealed it was all the bride's idea.
A picture of the seemingly insensitive proposal was posted on Reddit last week with many saying it was a terrible way to steal the actual bride and groom's thunder.
Reddit user Foreverinadaze said: "This makes me genuinely upset. Some people are just so f****** selfish," whilst Stingerfreak added: "[The bride]'s seconds away from lobbing a champagne bottle at that girl's head."
But now the newly engaged woman has told the New York Daily News the bride at the wedding is actually her sister.
The bride apparently suggested the proposal because it would make the day even more special for the whole family, says Megan, who declined to give her surname.
“My fiancĂ© told her he didn't want to ruin their day and she insisted it would only make it better!” Megan told the site.
“The groom of the wedding actually held my engagement ring the entire trip! Everyone in the Reddit picture knew the proposal was going to happen except for me!”
Megan is wearing the orange dress in the notorious picture while the man in green down on one in knee was the groom's best man. The family is from Iowa and the wedding took place in California.
The two couples have both been dating since they were teenagers and are 'incredibly close' Megan says.
Some speculated the newlyweds were “faking a smile” in the picture, but Megan said that was far from the case.
“She's actually trying not to cry because it was such a happy moment for all of us,” she said.
To prove the point Megan has released more pictures from the happy occasion showing the foursome hugging.
At their own wedding, she said roles will be reversed with her sister as the maid of honour, while the husband will be best man.
Megan also said that the family was saddened by the reaction to the hotograph on Reddit, and the suggestion that the proposal might have been borne out of malice.
"It was sad to see," she told the NYDN. "I guess if I didn't know the whole story, then I would feel the same way as some of them; however, I wouldn't voice my opinion about it because it's none of my business.
“I just want everyone to know the story behind the picture."
