BVN: Customers storm banks in Makurdi

Customers in Makurdi, Benue State, on Thursday besieged commercial banks in a desperate attempt to beat the CBN deadline for the registration of Biometric Verification Number.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria ordered commercial banks in the country to conclude the biometric verification of its customers by June 30.

An investigation conducted by NAN indicated that most of the customers that were struggling to obtain their BVNs were those who ignored banks’ alerts on the exercise.

One of the customers, Mr Andrew Akperan, who regretted not doing the exercise “a long time ago”, said he had undermined its importance.

He lamented the many hours he spent on the queue waiting to register for the new verification number.

“I came here at about 9.30 a.m. and was booked number 85 on queue and by the time it was my turn for the registration, it was well past 2 p.m.

“Those who came before me were here at about 8 a.m., but only completed their exercise at about 12 p.m.”

Another customer, Mr Denen Iorvihi, said he had a very rough time trying to obtain his verification number in one of the banks, claiming that he stayed on queue for more than three hours.

“I stayed on the queue for more than three hours waiting for my turn to do the verification exercise and obtain my number.

“It was a very boring experience and worse of all, I still couldn’t do it since I was booked number 600 on the queue of those waiting for the biometric registration,” said Iorvihi.

Some of the bank officials who spoke to NAN under conditions of anonymity, blamed customers for disregarding the alert notices sent to them for the exercise.
