THE Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted not less than 90 bags of Indian hemp weighing 1,259kg.
The hemp was seized by from suspected traffickers in the border town of Imeko in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of the state.
The officers on duty also intercepted smuggled goods worth N122.5 million.
Speaking with journalists on the development, on Wednesday June 3, 2015, in Abeokuta, Haruna Mamudu, the Customs Area Controller for the Ogun Command, said Customs officials along the Imeko axis of the state made the seizure, which was neatly packed in 359 parcels and 90 sacks from traffickers operating in the area.
Mamudu said that the 359 parcels were seized last Sunday, and the other 90 sacks containing the Indian hemp were confiscated about two weeks.
He also noted that the illicit substance was seized from the traffickers following a tip-off.
According to him, the seizure and the handing over of the consignment of Indian hemp to the NDLEA were part of the cooperation existing between the various security agencies regarding the fight against crime.
Mamudu also said the command in the first four months of this year, generated the sum of N2,356,937,173.89 as against N1,985,420,606.16 collected within the same period in 2014, making a difference of N371,516,567.73.
