A Kwara-based group, Kwara Concerned Citizens, has berated some pro-Bukola Saraki groups in the state for castigating the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
Mohammed had, last week, issued a statement on behalf of the APC rejecting Saraki as the Senate President. Some groups in Kwara State had branded Mohammed as working against the interest of Kwara where he and Saraki both hail from.
However, the KCC in a statement signed by two Kwara leaders – Dr. Hezekiah Oyedepo (Igbomina community leader) and Mr. Umoru Lafiaji (who is an Edu community leader) – said Mohammed should not be victimised for doing his job.
The statement read, “We are astonished that for carrying out his duties diligently, as he has always done, by articulating the position of his party, Lai Mohammed has become a target of attacks and threats from some perfidious persons in his home state.
“In the first instance, the opinions expressed by Mohammed in his statements are not his own, but those of his party. Secondly, since he articulates the position of his party at many levels – including intra- and inter-party, national as well as international – he is expected, at all times, to put the interest of the party above his personal interest.”
The KCC said Mohammed had always been forced to make sacrifices for the sake of his job and should be commended for doing so.
It said Mohammed, by virtue of being the spokesman for an opposition party, had to issue statements against his friend and former classmate, the late President Umaru Yar’adua, who was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.
