As controversy continues to trail the death of Osayande Ekhator, who died during a deliverance session in Benin, the Edo State Police Command has said it would conduct an autopsy on the deceased to ascertain the true cause of his death.
The 45-year-old man reportedly died last Monday during a spiritual exercise at Hope Ministry, also known as Holy Ghost Deliverance Centre, a church located at Uselu quartres, Egor Local Government Area of the state.
While some of the residents in the area suspected that he may have died as a result of hitting his head on a hard object due to the blood stain found on his head, his sister believed that his late brother was “beaten to death,” as his legs and hands had been tied up.
The father of the victim, Pa Arase Ekhator, said family was yet to come to terms with the sudden death of their son, maintaining that the late Osayande had opted for the exercise in his sane mind.
The resident pastor of the church, Isoken Ekundaye, however, denied the allegations, insisting that, “We don’t kill here. We don’t beat here. If they bring insane people, we heal.”
But the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Stephen Onwochei, explained that representatives of the family of the deceased and the church would be invited to witness the post-mortem in order to ensure fairness to all parties in the case.
He also said two other persons, in addition to the pastor in charge of the church, were in police custody to aid the command in the investigation.
