A suicide bomber detonated explosives during a service at a Redeemed Christian Church of God parish in Jigawa town, Yobe State, on Sunday, July 5, 2015.
Unofficial reports said the blast led to the death of five worshipers, including the church’s pastor. Other worshippers were also wounded, although an exact number of casualties is yet to be ascertained.
Eyewitnesses told Sahara Reporters that the suicide bomber entered the church during service and detonated the bomb, killing six people on the spot, including the bomber.
There are yet no official comments on the attack.
The Boko Haram sect has been staging a fierce resurgence since the beginning of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration on May 20, 2015, when he vowed to wipe out the sect.
Most of the terror groups attacks have been through suicide bombs in crowded places.
A Red Cross official, Hassan Muhammad, who was at the scene told Reuters: “People were just going to the church when the bomber entered, otherwise the casualty figure would have been higher.”
Yobe State police public relations officer, Toyin Gbadegesin, told the News Agency of Nigeria that, “A male suicide bomber detonated a bomb at Redeemed Church in the Jigawa area of Potiskum, killing five on the spot,” he said. “A female member of the church who sustained injuries also died while receiving treatment in the hospital.”
