The Director General, National Information Technology Agency (NITDA), Mr. Peter Jack, has said the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Communications Technology, will soon unveil the national e-governance master plan developed in the twilight of the last administration.
Fielding questions from the media, weekend in Daura, Katsina State, the DG said the agency and its parent ministry in partnership with the South Korea government developed the e-governance framework on bilateral relationship with Nigeria to make governance smarter, accessible and to bring about dividend of democracy to every Nigerian.
The NITDA boss said: “That framework is such that any moment from now we are planning to present it to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval and this was developed within the twilight of the last regime but where we are right now is to get the approval of the presidency for implementation.
“It is coming as a form of national e-governance master plan. Our goal is to build the capacity as well as provide the space for building government training centres and in terms of the capacity NITDA will be training 23,000 officials”, Jack said and added that the training process has started at the public training institute in Abuja.
He explained that the agency since inception has been in continuous support of information technology implementation in schools across the country. He said: “NITDA, as part of the ministry has been faithful to the ideals and principles of information technology usage and penetration in the country. It is the ministry’s mandate to ensure that Nigeria and Nigerians are connected digitally. Therefore we have been cooperative with stakeholders, in implementing policies and programmes to ensure that the mandate is met.”
According to him, the establishment of the Knowledge Access Venues (KAVs) across the country is part of the agency’s efforts towards building a virile and resilient knowledge-based economy using ICT as enabler has resulted to ICT contributing about 10 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
On the unveiling of the KAVs in the state, he said: “I’m particularly delighted to be commissioning KAV in Katsina, which fits into integrating the youths in the ICT penetration process in the country. Our youths are cardinal members of the internet ecosystem. I implore the users of the facility to continue to use the venue for learning and collaboration to harness positive values for our youth population.”
The benefits, Jack said, include acquisition of ICT skills, research capabilities, and entrepreneurship for the youth as part of the education curriculum.
