Following the personnel deficit in the Nigeria Police Force, President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that the Federal Government would recruit 10,000 persons into the service.
Also, consideration is being given to the expansion of the closed-circuit television cameras system across major cities and towns in the country, while the police accountability mechanism would be strengthen.
The President disclosed this at a national security simmit in Abuja, on Monday, August 17, 2015.
Buhari said: “In furtherance to this, the Federal Government is planning to recruit at least extra 10,000 police officers and establish and properly train and equiped federal anti-terrorism multi-agency task force that will effectively address the challenges of insurgency in a sustainable manner.
“In the meantime, efforts are being made to enhance the operational capacity of officers of the Nigeria Police through a tailor-made training programme that will give them the right civil orientation in their roles as guardians of the Constitution; in order to further strengthen the security of the public space, consideration is being given to the expansion of the CCTV monitoring system across major cities and towns in the country, while the police accountability mechanism will be strengthened.
“Above all, in appreciation of the strategic roles of the citizens and community in modern policing, this administration will encourage states to look at states level community interacting with police under a model that will integrate members of the community to policing functions at the grassroots level.”
Similarly, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, advocated for the institution of a “National Integrity Plan” to be supported by a National Integrity Institute.
This, according to him, “shall refocus our ethical, moral and spiritual energies and indomitable spirit of our people into building a peaceful, prosperous and democracitc country able and willing to take its pride of place in the comity of nations.”
Abubakar who was the keynote Speaker at the summit, also advocated that those who conspire to corrupt Nigeria’ institutions from outside should be made to face the same consequences as those who do it from within.
“We are 100 per cent in support of your fight against corruption in this country, and it is our belief that all those found guilty should not only have their entire assets seized or and fortified to government but also face jail sentences.
“Regardless of how many mosques or churches you have built or the charitable works you have carried out, the community will still wish to know the source of your wealth, the respectability you desire will only be conferred when the legitimacy of these sources is verified certified.” he said.
