Louis van Gaal says Manchester United move up to Pedro

Louis van Gaal says he is no closer to knowing whether Pedro will leave Barcelona for Manchester United.

The Spain forward admitted this week his Barca future is unclear, although he denied telling the club's technical secretary he wants to leave.

United must match his £21.2m release clause to get the deal done, according to Spain-based journalist Graham Hunter, but Van Gaal says the final decision rests with the player.

Asked if he was optimistic of completing the transfer the United manager said: "You have to ask Pedro, not me. My answer is it's a process, it's a club, it's a player, and we are there also.

"I don't mention anything until he has signed. When he has signed I come to you and say 'hey, Pedro is here'. That is still not the case. We shall wait and see."

Van Gaal did admit Pedro fits the mould of the kind of player he is still seeking before the transfer window shuts but the 28-year-old, who scored the winning goal in this week's European Super Cup, is still "loved" at Barca.

That was the word used by his current boss Luis Enrique, who said: "It is an unusual and difficult situation. It is a contradiction. He wants to stay but he also wants to have more minutes. I will continue to play those that I think are best for each match.

"What I am looking forward to though is the end of the transfer window so that everything will then be clear."
