Man aged 24 'drowned on his own stag do' after being found in dock with friends

A 24-year-old man has drowned while on his own stag do.

The body of the groom-to-be was recovered from a dock in Liverpool.

Firefighters managed to rescue two of his friends - both in their early twenties after the alarm was raished.

The friends had been drinking in popular bars around the Salthouse Dock are of the city on Saturday night.

Firefighters, paramedics and police officers attended at 9.45pm after a report of concern for the safety of three men who were in the water.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service managed to rescue two of the men, and carried out a further search for the third man.

Following an extensive search of the dock, firefighters located the third man who was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, tragically he was declared dead a short time later.

Paul German, a manager at Circo and 1770 in the docks complex, was working on Saturday night.

Paul said: “It was a real shock when we heard what had happened - it was such a young life as well. We were mid-service and someone rang and told us.

“People in the restaurant were also aware of what had happened and we carried on as normal but the atmosphere in here changed completely.

“All the bars and restaurants around here are so shocked.”

The entrance to Blue Bar and Grill looks out onto the Salthouse Dock. A hostess who works at the front of the restaurant said: “I was working last night and police had closed the road in front of the restaurant.

“When I finished my shift there was a few rescuers at the side of the dock and there was a white bag, so I thought someone must have died. We aren’t sure if the person who died was here earlier in the night, but we are just so shocked that this has happened.”

Police said the three men, who are believed to be friends, are understood to have been drinking in the Albert Dock area before the incident.

Taneem was also at work at Spice restaurant overlooking the Salthouse Dock.

He said: “It is crazy to think this happened. It is unbelievable that someone died here in front of the restaurant. It is such a touristy place and it has completely shocked me.”

An investigation is now under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

The three men, who are believed to be friends, are from Leigh near Wigan, in Greater Manchester.
