The boyband, now made up of Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan after Zayn Malik quit earlier this year, have allegedly agreed to an 'extended hiatus' of at least 12 months from March 2016 to focus on solo work.
According to The Sun newspaper, the boys, who have been together for five years, decided not to tour their latest record during a top secret meeting in London last weekend and Directioners across the globe will no doubt be devastated when they hear the news.
A source told the paper: "The guys have been together for five years, which is an incredible run for any boyband.
"They fully deserve to have at least a year to work on their own projects. There is absolutely no bad blood between them and they are all 100 per cent behind the decision."
They added that the hiatus is 100 per cent "not a split" and they will get back together in the future to release further material
One Direction's last live concert will reportedly be on October 31 at Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield.
Their new record is likely to be released around Christmas time and the boys dropped the video for the single Drag Me Down this month.
The boys literally go out of this world as they transform into astronauts and are sent into orbit in the video.
They shot the video at the NASA Space Centre in Houston, Texas and pulled out all of the stops to make it pretty epic.
The boys are put into orange space suits before it cuts to the boys belting out their tune on the tarmac.
Fans have already started tweeting about how heartbroken they are after the story broke about their 'hiatus' tonight, with one posting: "Literally retching at the fact 1D are splitting up, av never been this upset in all of me absolute life man. Never."
