Some councillors richer than Buhari – APC chief

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Pastor Bankole Oluwajana, says the list of assets publicly declared by President Muhammadu Buhari shows that many local government chairmen and councillors in Lagos are richer than him.

Oluwajana, who ran for governor of Ondo State on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy in 2007, said this during an interview with our correspondent.

According to a statement by the President’s Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President has about N30m in his only bank account with the Union Bank Plc.

According to the statement, the President has shares in Berger Paints, Skye Bank and Union Bank and a total of seven houses, comprising two mud and a standard house in Daura, his hometown; two homes in Kaduna, one in Kano and one in Abuja.

Reacting to the development, Oluwajana described Buhari as a decent and honest man.

He said, “The asset declaration is a good development. He has lived up to his promise. It is good that he has done this before appointing ministers because now that he has raised the standard, the ministers must follow suit.

“We are amazed that the President has only N30m in cash despite being a former Head of State, Minister of Petroleum and Chairman, Petroleum Trust Fund. He has mud houses and some plots of land.

“Yemi Osinbajo had a highly successful legal practice and I am surprised that is all he has. Buhari has just N30m. Some councillors in some states, especially Lagos, have far more than that. People who have accumulated so much money should be ashamed of themselves especially those getting money through deceitful means.”

Oluwajana, who commended the President’s performance in the last 100 days, urged him to ensure equitable distribution of appointments just as former President Olusegun Obasanjo did during his administration.
