CHAN Qualifiers: Super Eagles beat Burkina Faso in Port Harcourt

The home-based Super Eagles team are on course to qualify for the 2016 African Nations Championship, following their 2-0 win in Saturday’s final round, first leg qualifier against Etalons of Burkina Faso.

Playing at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, the Nigeria team knew they need to make their home advantage count so the second leg away from home would come with less pressure.

While they would have hoped for more, the home based Eagles could only get a goal each in the first and second half as they head to the second leg.

Bature Yaro got the opener for Nigeria when he rifled the ball into the net in the 25th minute to give the Super Eagles B team the lead after they had held much of the possession but with very little to show for it.

Guilty of not making the most of the other chances they created, the Eagles added one more goal from the penalty spot as Gbolahan Salami calmly converted the kick awarded to Nigeria in the 77th minute.

Nigeria is targeting its second straight qualification for the CHAN tournament having finally broken the jinx in 2014 where she made it to South Africa to feature in the competition reserved for senior players plying their trade in their country’s domestic league.

The winner over two legs between Nigeria and Burkina Faso will be eligible for a place at the 4th African Nations Championship taking place in Rwanda early next year.
