Clinton emails targeted in Russia-Linked attack

Hackers linked to Russia tried at least five times to trick Hillary Clinton into infecting her private computer server while she was secretary of state, newly released emails show.

The 67-year-old received the virus-riddled emails, which were disguised as speeding tickets from New York state, on 3 August, 2011.

The emails instructed recipients to print attached tickets, and when they were opened would have allowed hackers to take control of a victim's computer.

Security researchers who analysed the malicious software in September 2011 said that infected computers would transmit information to at least three server computers overseas, including one in Russia.

Nick Merrill, a spokesman for Mrs Clinton's Democratic presidential campaign, said: "We have no evidence to suggest she replied to this email or that she opened the attachment.

"As we have said before, there is no evidence that the system was ever breached. All these emails show is that, like millions of other Americans, she received spam."

Most people are bombarded by spam or virus-infected messages on a daily basis.

But these messages show hackers knew Mrs Clinton's private email address, and sent her fake traffic tickets from the state where she lives.

The email misspelled the city Chatham, where the speeding infringement was supposed to come from, and came from a supposed New York City government account.

The Democratic front runner has faced increasing scrutiny over her use of a private email server at her home.

She has insisted the server was secure, but admitted it was a "mistake" last month.

In the latest release of 6,300 pages of emails on Wednesday, policy chief Ann-Marie Slaughter laments about the department's technology and claims: "NO ONE uses a State-issued laptop and even high officials routinely end up using their home email accounts to be able to get their work done quickly and effectively."

The email cover the killing of Osama bin Laden by US special forces, and the impact of the Arab Spring.
