The Ebonyi State government at the weekend shut down popular nightclub, Brifina Garden, located along water works Road Abakaliki, for allegedly employing strippers and engaging in illegal activities.
The state government claimed the nightclub was involved in pornography, prostitution, sodomy, wanton selling and consumption of illicit drugs, and other prohibited substances.
Speaking after sealing off the hotel, the governor’s Senior Special Adviser on Security, Ali Odefa, said when information of the dealings of the hotel got to his office, he invited the manager and managers of other clubs involved in such acts to his office and informed them that government was not happy with such activities.
“I also warned the managers to desist from such and stop parading girls who dance naked while some objects are inserted into their vagina just to entertain their viewers”.
He explained that two out of all the club managers invited heeded to the instruction while the Brifina manager did not.
The Brifina manager, Mr. Odefa said, sent her girls on the stage to still perform the pornographic act, sodomy and illicit drugs which made the government to wield the big stick.
He said the illicit activities in the hotel pose a security threat to the state as all manner of people patronize the hotel.
“Brifina Gardens is notorious for criminal hideouts, severally, security agencies have made some arrest of criminals inside Brifina Garden, and it’s a festering nest for criminals and that is what we don’t want, that is the reason why we are sealing off this place,” he disclosed.
The Manager of the club, Chineye Okorie, however, said it was put in place to entertain people. She says she pays each performer N10,000 to dance naked in the club on Wednesdays, while she pays any girl who dances naked on Fridays N15,000.
She admitted that she was warned by government to stop her business but that she told the government to formally write the company while she went ahead with her normal business.
She said: “I was invited by the SSA on Security and he told me to stop my business and I told them to write to the company. This is Nigeria and anybody can go for any employment so long as you are earning money and you don’t steal or prostitute”.
“This is someone’s business. Someone is feeding from this and the right thing needs to be done.” she said.
One of the girls arrested in the premises said she was the coordinator of the strippers and that she gets boys from Lagos each week who are hired to dance naked with the girls.
She corroborated the claim by the club manager that each person goes home with N10, 000 on Wednesdays and N15,000 on Fridays, making it a total of N25,000 a week.
