EFCC quizzes ex-Benue gov, Suswam, for nine hours

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has commenced a probe into the administration of former Governor of Benue State, Dr. Gabriel Suswam.

Suswam, who was invited last week to appear before the commission, honoured the invitation by 10am on Monday and was subsequently taken into the Idiagbon House headquarters of the commission for a nine-hour interrogation.

The ex-governor was still being grilled by a team of interrogators from the Economic Governance Unit of the commission as of the time of filing this report by 4pm on Monday.

Suswam who governed Benue State from 2007 to 2015, is being interrogated for alleged abuse of office, diversion of public funds, embezzlement and fraud.

His interrogation followed the quizzing of a former Benue State Commissioner of Finance, Mr. Omadachi Oklobia, who served under him, for alleged corruption on Friday.

Oklobia was interrogated for the same alleged offences of diversion of public funds, abuse of office and fraud.

The commissioner, who quizzed last Friday, was later released on bail.

The interrogation of the finance commissioner indicated strongly that the EFCC had commenced a full-blown investigation into the administration of the former governor.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Dr. Paul Orhii, was also at the commission in relation with an ongoing probe into an alleged abuse of office and contract fraud.

Orhii, who spoke to journalists outside the commission’s headquarters, said that he was there to report to those in charge of his case in line with an administrative bail granted him when he was interrogated in August.

The NAFDAC DG, who ignored the protests from his aides and police orderly not to speak to journalists, said that he got to the commission by 12:30pm and was asked to go by 2pm.

The NAFDAC DG said that he was still on administrative bail until investigation into the allegations against him was concluded.

He said, “I came here around 12:30pm and I am just leaving now at 2pm. I was granted an administrative bail in August and I am still on an administrative bail until the investigation is concluded.”
