September crashes claim 30 lives in Oyo – FRSC

The Oyo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps said 30 people died in 27 road crashes in September with 125 people injured.

Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Salami Kolawole, said on Wednesday that most of the crashes were caused by excessive speeding and the rush by commercial drivers to capitalise on the surge in people’s movement across Nigeria in the last four months of the year to make more money.

He said, “In the month of September, 27 road accidents were recorded with 30 deaths. A total of 125 people were also injured in the crashes. On the Lagos- Ibadan Expressway, we have five cases. It is the route with the highest number of accidents in the month.

“Accidents involving commercial motorcyclists are 13 for the month and Ogbomoso has the highest cases recorded.

“In the latter part of the year, there is always an increase in vehicular and human movements. In the last four months of the year, commonly referred to as Ember months, a lot of activities are held which make the roads to be busier than before. There is no demon that kills people on the roads; the accidents are caused by human errors.

“Because there is an increase in the number of people moving around, many commercial drivers will target more trips within a limited time so that they can make more money. They will not create time to take proper care of their vehicles or rest properly before another trip.

“Some of them rely on stimulant and other drugs to stay awake but this only contribute to the failure to make correct decision on the road.”
