Several people were injured in two separate accidents in Ogun State.
The first incident involved a petrol tanker which fell on its side in Owode-Ijako along the Lagos/Abeokuta expressway.
The petrol tanker which was transporting diesel in the early hours of Saturday enroute Ifo-Abeokuta expressway rammed on a median and fell on its side before spilling its content.
The driver of the tanker, identified as Wale Olaitan, was reported to have been burnt beyond recognition following the eventual fire outbreak.
It was also learnt that a family of six caught in the incident sustained varying degrees of injuries while property including cars, houses, and shops were also destroyed.
A witness said a family of six who lived in a nearby house suffered degrees of burns and were receiving treatment in the hospital.
Speaking of the accident, a resident of the area, Kazeem Saheed, said, “My father is the owner of one of the houses affected by the fire. The tanker, from the information, we gathered fell around 4.30 a.m. on that Owode-Ijako junction, where the road is so bad. It spilled its content.
”About fifteen minutes later, there was a loud bang and the whole place caught fire, including the tanker. Nobody knew what triggered the fire”, he stated
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Enforcement and Compliance Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the tanker driver lost control due to “over-speeding and brake failure.”
He explained that the incident led to gridlock on the dual carriage road,, forcing many motorists heading toward Ifo to drive against traffic.
In a separate accident, an 18-seater bus with registration number Lagos, XL 42 EPE also crashed at Onijanganjangan along the same route as the first. A witness, Ibraheem Amosun, explained that a Mazda bus en route Abeokuta took off in Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State. He said all the 18 passengers were seriously injured but were rescued by men of the Ogun State Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS. He said the injured were taken to General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta for medical attention.
