Despite a warning from the Enugu State Police Command, hundreds of
pro-Biafra agitators yesterday staged a peaceful protest in Enugu.
The
Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer Ebere Amaraizu had in a
letter entitled: “Alleged plan by groups to embark on violent protests”,
warned the protesters not to carry out the protest.
“The Enugu
State Command of the NIgeria Police Force, wishes to inform members of
the public that information available to her reveal that there are
alleged plan by some group of people masquerading under the aegis of
IPOB, MASSOB, amongst others to embark on violent protest using
dangerous weapons within the state and its environs.
“In view of
this, the command wishes to remind those fanning the ember of this
unlawful act as well as their supporters to be law abiding and desist
from such intended protest in the state as security operatives of the
command have been directed to fish out those in this habit and bring
them to book,” Amaraizu had said in the statement.
But, the
protesters ignored the warning and took their protest to varrious
streets of Enugu State, demanding immediate release of Radio Biafra
Director, Nnamdi Kalu.
The protesters, who were drawn from the
Indigeneous People of Biafra( IPOB) and the Movement for the
Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, (MASSOB) obstructed
vehicular movements for several hours.
