Man charged with attempted murder of Paris train attack-thwarter appears in court

A man who is accused of stabbing Spencer Stone, one of three Americans who thwarted an attack on a Paris-bound train, has appeared in court in Sacramento, California.

James Tran, 28, from California, has been charged with attempted murder. He did not enter a plea.

Mr Stone, a US Air Force airman, was stabbed in the torso several times last month in what police described as a "nightlife-related incident" in Sacramento.

He was released from hospital on 15 October.

Mr Stone, along with friends Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos subdued a gunman on a passenger train in France in August.

Authorities have said the fight was not related to Mr Stone's role in the train incident.

The three Americans received accolades for their actions from President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande.

Tran is being held on a $2m bond and is scheduled to return to court on 1 December.
