Fergie: Jose will improve United

Sir Alex Ferguson is predicting a "massive improvement" at Manchester United under new manager Jose Mourinho.

Ferguson also feels Mourinho made a mistake in agreeing to return to Chelsea for a second spell in June 2013.

Mourinho won the Premier League title with the Blues for a third time in 2014/15 but his repeat tenure ultimately turned out to be an ill-fated one and culminated in his sacking in December last year.

The Portuguese coach had long been touted as a potential Old Trafford boss - partly because of his long-standing friendship with Ferguson - and was appointed in May just days after the dismissal of Louis van Gaal.

United won the FA Cup under Dutchman van Gaal but finished in fifth place in the Premier League, outside of the Champions League qualification places.

And Ferguson is expecting things to get much better at United under Mourinho.

"I think there'll be a massive improvement," he said in a lengthy question-and-answer session with Sky Sports News HQ reporter Jim White.

"I think Jose was wrong to go back to Chelsea. It's always difficult when you go back somewhere for a second time.

"He's won the European Cup twice with different clubs and won titles with all the clubs he's been at. You can't ignore his record and I think Manchester United is the right kind of club for him."
