A Tale of Many Trekkers: See the list of trekkers so far

After now-famous Suleiman Hashimu trekked from Lagos to Abuja in honour of General Buhari's presidential win, it seems trekking fever is all the rage. Weekend Magazine takes a look at some of them and their various missions.

In preparation of the May 29, 2015 presidential hand-over, Kogi-born Oladele John Nihi, on Monday began a trek from Abuja to Otuoke, Bayelsa State, in honour of President Goodluck Jonathan. Nihi who began the 700 kilometre trip at about 6am last Monday, said it is to celebrate President
Jonathan as the true hero of democracy. "I chose to walk for Jonathan because he conceded election, thus sustaining democracy," he said.

He said via Twitter: "Even if all I can do is to clean and sweep his compound in Otuoke before his official hand-over on 29 May, 2015, I am okay with that."
Nihi last Wednesday, got a female partner in his journey. The lady identified as Gloria joined him at Abaji for the trip and vowed to make it to Otuoke.

According to Nihi, Nigerians across religion and party affiliations have shown them support and even take a walk with them to cover some distance in solidarity, with some promising to join them.

Abubakar Umar, Yola to Abuja
Abubakar Umar, 43, aka 'Duduwalle,' started trekking from Yola on April 26, to celebrate the victory of President-elect, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, arrived Bauchi last Saturday, en route Abuja. He said he was carrying more than 300 letters of requests from people of Adamawa State to Buhari. According to him, most of the letters contained requests urging the president-elect to address the problem of insecurity and re-build the sub-region.

Talatu, Kaduna to Abuja
The first woman to embark on the venture is Hajiya Talatu who began her trek from Kaduna to Abuja to celebrate Buhari's victory.

Adamu Abdullahi, Maiduguri to Abuja
Trekking from Maiduguri to Abuja is Adamu Abdullahi, 45, who began on April 30 so that he can meet with Gen Buhari to congratulate him on his victory at the presidential elections. The husband and father of four who took off from Jimtilo Park requested all Borno State indigenes to send him their petitions which he would forward to Gen. Buhari.

Haruna, Kano to Abuja
Driven by a different motive, Bayero University Kano student, Haruna as he is simply called, began a trek from Kano to Abuja to protest the outcome of the Taraba governorship election. For Haruna it doesn't matter if he is called a feminist, "I will continue my trekking protest to support the APC governorship candidate, Hajia Aisha Jummai Alhassan.

Nazifi Lawal and Ibrahim Sani, Funtua to Yola
Nazifi Lawal and Ibrahim Sani, both from Funtua in Katsina State, have embarked on a trek to Yola, Adamawa State, in gratitude to former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for his role in the defeat of the PDP in the general elections. They finished their secondary education in Government Day Secondary Funtua in 2010 and are a tricycle operator and a computer worker, respectively.

Musa Ibrahim, Kaduna to Abuja
A double amputee, Musa Ibrahim, 30, embarked on a trek from Kaduna to Abuja where he hopes to meet with the President-elect as part of solidarity been shown across the country to the president-elect. The father of two said the decision to trek to Abuja was in order to deliver a message to the president-elect to urge him to take into consideration the needs of the physically challenged or handicaps and give them recognition in his government.

Musa Badawa, Kano to Abuja
Musa Badawa, from Kano State, is trekking from Kano to Abuja in commemoration of Gen. Buhari's victory. He has received support from telecoms giant Airtel in form of a life insurance cover.

Paul Tankwa, Taraba to Bayelsa
Taraba State indigene, Paul Tankwa, 35, is heading to Bayelsa to present an award to President Jonathan for conceding defeat. His trek began on May 1 and he hopes to cover the 660 kilometre journey by May 29.

Desmond Shija, Abuja to Makurdi
Abuja-based business man, Desmond Shija, 34, who visited Media Trust headquarters, Abuja, said that he had vowed to trek from Abuja to Wurukum round-about in Makurdi, if the gubernatorial candidate of the APC in the state wins the election.
Commenting on blazing the trend, Suleiman Hashimu from who it all began said: "Mine was to fulfil a promise I made and not for any reward. It is good that they have copied me but I urge them not to do it for financial gains.
Hashimu added that: "Many of them were given my number and have been calling me when they arrive Abuja and are asking to meet with me." While commending them, he urged them to be weary of security challenges.
