Unidentified gunmen attacked a western Mali town close to the border of Mauritania on Saturday before they were repelled by the military, an army spokesman said.
The armed attack took place in Nara, a Mali town near the Mauritanian border.
Army spokesman Souleymane Maiga said troops repelled the attackers who once took shelter in a mosque.
He did not disclose the number of casualty and origin of the attackers.
The attack came after Tuareg rebels in the northern region signed a peace agreement with the government earlier this month.
