OAU VC warns students against cultism

The authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University have warned newly admitted students of the institution to shun cultism and vandalism.

The OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bamitale Omole, stated this during the matriculation of 6,500 students.

The VC, who said the university had zero tolerance for cultism, added that the authorities would expel any student that engaged in any illegal activity.

He said, “I will again like to congratulate you because gaining admission to OAU and standing here this morning to take the matriculation oat has not been an easy journey and indeed, it can be likened to the proverbial camel that successfully passed through the eye of the needle.

“This is because out of over 30,000 candidates that chose OAU as their first choice, you are among the 14,000 that scored above 200 in UTME and among the 6,500 that were finally admitted to the university.

“As you may be aware, the motto of OAU is ‘for learning and culture’. I expect you to combine academic excellence with our rich cultural heritage of respect to authority, decency, sense of purpose and hard work at all time. It is for this reason that you must respect constituted authority and obey university’s laws and regulation at all time. The university has zero tolerance for cultism and examination malpractice.

“I, therefore, appeal to you not to allow anybody to tempt you into indulging in cult activities or get involved in any form of examination malpractice. The easiest way to get expelled from this institution is getting caught in the two repugnant misdemeanours.”

Omole also urged the students to focus on their studies.

He added, “No doubt, you are all aware of the dwindling economic fortunes in the nation. The university administration will however continue to make the welfare of students paramount in its plans and provide facilities and make better use of them.”
