Authorities say an eighth person has been found dead following flash flooding in a Utah-Arizona border community.
The Utah Division of Emergency Management says in a Facebook post that an "additional victim has been located below the Central Street crossing bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to 8. There are still 5 unaccounted for."
The eight deaths occurred after a wall of water swept away two vehicles carrying women and children Monday evening.
Before the latest fatality update, Hildale assistant fire chief Kevin Barlow confirmed seven dead.
He also said three people survived as the flash flooding washed the vehicles several hundred yards downstream.
Barlow says the rescue effort is ongoing through the night but scaled back because of treacherous conditions in the sister towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Arizona.
