The Federal Road Safety Corps on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of a commercial taxi driver who stripped naked while trying to evade arrest in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The corps also stated that the suspect would be made to undergo a psychiatric test before being prosecuted.
The driver, identified as Ekpe Okpo Ekpeyong, had on Tuesday stripped naked when some officials of the FRSC demanded his vehicle particulars along the busy Marian Road.
In a twist on Wednesday, the state sector commander of FRSC, Mr. Ikechukwu Igwe, said the driver behaved sane when he was identified and flagged down along the same Marian Road.
Igwe went further to disclose that on noticing that he was about to be arrested, the driver again stripped to resist arrest but he was overpowered by the FRSC officials on duty.
He said, “His name is Ekpe Okpo Ekpeyong and he gave his address as 8, Fuller Street in Calabar-South. Recall I gave the orders that the driver should be arrested and when he was stopped along the same Marian Road today (Wednesday), he was gentle and this time had his seat belt on.
“My men demanded for his driving licence and he gave them but when he saw that he was about to be arrested, he took off his clothes and started behaving funny, but this time, he was overpowered by the officials on duty. His vehicle is in our office and he is undergoing investigation under our custody.”
The sector commander also said the command had gone through its database to establish the authenticity of Ekpeyong’s driving licence and vehicle particulars but discovered that they were not genuine.
Igwe said the driver would first be taken to the Psychiatric Hospital in Calabar to establish his mental state before further prosecution.
“His driving licence and vehicle particulars are not genuine. We will take him to the psychiatric hospital here in Calabar to find out if he is a normal person because no person in his right senses will strip just anyhow,” he said.
